Generic Propecia is finasteride 1 mg, the same molecule as the brand, taken once a day for male pattern hair loss. It is the most studied oral treatment for the condition, and it does one specific thing well: it slows or stops the thinning, and in many men regrows some of what was recently lost. What it does not do is restore hair that has been gone for years — and any page that tells you otherwise is selling rather than explaining.
How finasteride works
Male pattern hair loss is driven by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone made from testosterone by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. In men with a genetic sensitivity to it, DHT gradually shrinks the follicles on the crown and hairline until the hairs they produce are too fine and short to cover the scalp.
Finasteride blocks that enzyme, cutting scalp DHT substantially. Deprived of the signal that was shrinking them, follicles stop miniaturising, and some recover enough to grow visible hair again. That is the whole mechanism — which is also why it works on hair that is thinning but still alive, and not on a follicle that closed years ago.

That last row is the part worth thinking hardest about before starting: finasteride maintains a state rather than curing a condition, so the real decision is whether you want to keep taking a daily tablet for the foreseeable future.
How to take it
One 1 mg tablet a day, with or without food, at whatever time you will actually remember. Consistency matters far more than the hour. Missing a single day is not a crisis; missing weeks undoes progress. Tablets are film-coated so that the active drug cannot be absorbed through skin from handling — do not crush or split them.
Side effects, stated plainly
Most men take finasteride without noticeable side effects. In the registration trials, a small minority — roughly 2 in 100 — reported reduced libido, erectile difficulty or reduced ejaculate volume, and in most cases these resolved after stopping the drug, and in some cases while still taking it.
There is also an honest area of uncertainty. A number of men report sexual or mood symptoms that persist after stopping, sometimes called post-finasteride syndrome. How common that is, and its mechanism, remain genuinely debated in the literature rather than settled in either direction. We would rather tell you that than pretend the question is closed: if it concerns you, that is a reasonable conversation to have with a doctor before your first tablet, not after.
Two practical points that catch people out: finasteride lowers PSA readings, so tell any doctor arranging prostate screening that you take it; and breast tenderness or lumps, though rare, should always be checked.
Who must not take it
Finasteride is for adult men. It is not for women — and women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets, because the drug can harm the development of a male foetus. It is not for children. If you have liver problems, raise that with a doctor first.
