Generic Levitra is vardenafil, the third of the three main ED molecules alongside sildenafil and tadalafil. It works the same way they do — relaxing the blood vessels that supply the penis so an erection is easier to get and keep once you are aroused — but it has a character of its own, and for some men that character is the reason to choose it.
What vardenafil does differently
Two things, both modest but real. It is somewhat less affected by food than sildenafil, so a meal beforehand interferes less. And it is more selective in what it acts on, which in practice means the blue-tinged vision some men get from sildenafil is rarer with vardenafil.
Its window is much the same as sildenafil's — four to five hours — so it is a before-sex medicine rather than a weekend one. If the length of the window is your problem, the molecule to look at is tadalafil, not this one.

None of these three is stronger than the others. They differ in timing and in which side effects you are more likely to notice, and the sensible way to choose is to try one properly before switching.
Where this sits in Australia
Vardenafil is a Schedule 4 (prescription-only) medicine in Australia. Generic versions sold from overseas are not TGA-registered products, which is why no Australian pharmacy stocks these particular packs. How to take it
One tablet, 25 to 60 minutes before sex, and no more than one dose in 24 hours. Arousal is still required — vardenafil enables the response rather than producing it.

"A fair trial" means several attempts, with enough time, without a heavy meal or a heavy night. Most disappointing first doses are circumstantial rather than pharmacological.
Side effects and the one absolute rule
The common ones are headache, facial flushing, a blocked or runny nose and indigestion — the same family as the other two molecules, since they share a mechanism. They are dose-related and usually settle within hours.
The absolute rule: never combine vardenafil with nitrates (angina medicines such as glyceryl trinitrate) or with amyl nitrite "poppers" — the combination can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. Vardenafil also needs particular care alongside certain heart-rhythm medicines and strong antifungals; see ED pills and other medicines. An erection lasting more than four hours, or sudden loss of vision or hearing, needs urgent help.
If vardenafil is not the answer
Generic Viagra is the sildenafil equivalent and the most widely used starting point. Switching molecules, sensibly
Men often arrive at vardenafil after sildenafil disappointed them. That can be the right move, but only after the obvious explanations are ruled out — otherwise you carry the same problem to a new tablet and conclude nothing works.
- Was there enough time? Twenty-five minutes is the earliest, not the norm.
- Was there a heavy meal? Food blunts sildenafil more than vardenafil, so this is the one case where switching genuinely helps.
- Was there a lot of alcohol? No molecule in this class overcomes that.
- Was the dose ever raised? Trying 100 mg of sildenafil before abandoning it is a fairer test than switching at 50 mg.
If a full dose of two different molecules fails under good conditions, the useful next step is a doctor rather than a third tablet — erectile dysfunction that resists treatment can be an early sign of cardiovascular or hormonal problems.
